Steven Fuchs' WebsiteSummary:Our demanding education expects us to fruit an expanding
identity. The realm in which we express our education begins to broaden as we design and redesign space, buildings, objects, and
ourselves. Our skill set is in high demand. Though the public may regard our role as a precursor to construction, an architect examines self, subject and site. Clients only begin to understand the rigors of our education. How will the general public ever understand this commodity we call design? Unless we continue to redesign ourselves, the products of our architectural education will remain static.
This education is the basis for many design professions; it commands objective exploration of design identity. Learning the framework of concept, methods, and materials further defindes not only the essence of architecture, but also, the dedicated journey demads intense personal development. The most important object we create is ourselves, and as we are placed in the public's view, careful consideration should be taken to expand the future of our profession.
Professional identity is a currency; we are an added value to society. In keeping with the currency of
"personal objective", one must not only engage design problems but also the problem of self and profession. Sober adjustment of both micro and macro issues will change the longstanding public perceptionof what value we add to the world. We must learn who we are, before others accept the full extent of our importance.
Coming to the realization that architecture is not just about buildings has been a fantastic passage for me. I have choosen to objectively submit myself, as an object of design currency, to the profession of architecture. A lifetime of architectural education in the form of both built and unbuilt "objecture" functions as a reward...adding value to society.
As Architects, we form and function as
design currency.Steven Raymond Fuchs, Jr.
